An Air Defense Tactical Operations Center Operator is a member of the Army’s field artillery team. Artillery are weapons that fire large ammunition or missiles to support infantry and tank units in combat. The Air Defense Tactical Operations Center Operator primarily supervises or serves as a member of an early warning team.
Here are the duties of an Air Defense Tactical Operations Center Operator:
- Detect, track and identify aircraft
- Broadcast early warning information
- Perform operations and intelligence duties in Air Defense units
Requirements:
Air Defense Tactical Operations Center Operators must have the physical stamina to perform strenuous activities for long periods without rest. They’re also required to have normal color vision in order to read color-coded ammunition, maps, and charts.
Training:
Job training for an Air Defense Tactical Operations Center Operator consists of nine weeks of Basic Training, where you’ll learn basic Soldiering skills, and 19 weeks of Advanced Individual Training. Part of this time is spent in a classroom and part in the field under simulated combat. Some of the skills you’ll learn are:
- Methods of computing target locations
- Ammunition-handling techniques
- Gun, missile and rocket system operations
- Artillery tactics

Advanced Responsibilities:
Advanced level Air Defense Tactical Operations Center Operators supervise and train other Soldiers. As an advanced Air Defense Tactical Operations Center Operator, you may be involved in:
- Inventorying and destroying classified material
- Performing security functions
- Operating over radio nets
