Colleges in California
The sweeping state of California, with the highest population of any state in the US, is home to many military installations, for all branches of service. However, the only major active component Army installation is at Fort Irwin in the Mojave Desert, although the Presidio of Monterey (on the beautiful Monterey Bay) is home to the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center--one of the most coveted Army schools.
California is a state of great variety, from the rich wilderness and rural areas of Northern California to the cool, pleasant wine country of the Bay area, to the hot high desert of the Mojave, to the enormous orange groves in the Mediterranean climate in Central California and the hot summers of Southern California. The public universities of the University of California and California State University have campuses in every major city, and some of the most prestigious private schools, such as Stanford University, are located in the state.
